Breastmilk in a Carton! Seriously!

Wow! Seriously? This is SO COOL and well, different. Really this picture is worth a thousand words!

I mean, really? That is such a perfect solution for women who can’t breastfeed for one reason or another. I wonder if it’s for real? I’m American so the concept is admittedly hard to wrap my head around, despite the fact that I would FULLY support such an idea here. Yet I know it would cause all kinds of hullabaloo if someone actually tried to do it.

People are so funny. One person told me that it was DISGUSTING to drink human milk and I just had to laugh because, you know, I worked on a dairy farm for a year. The fact the milk was organic hardly does anything at all remove the mental image burned into my brain of shit-covered udders being milked. People have no issue at all drinking cow’s milk but I’d pay real money to find out who the first person was that looked at that urine/blood/shit/semen/random other things soaked, massive THING dangling between the cows hindquarters and though, “Looks tasty!”.

People think absolutely nothing of feeding their children a collection of bovine proteins, and nutrients designed for COWS, chemicals and corn syrup but suggest they feed their child some other *person’s* milk and you get violent, knee-jerk, disgusted reactions. It makes NO sense to me whatsoever.

And yet I was raised here, too, and I definitely would have to think a minute before drinking someone else’s milk. I guess it’s all what you’re conditioned to think, eh?

In any case, Mongolians highly prize breastfeeding. I very much appreciate their cultures attitude towards one of nature’s finest products!

It has been said often that breastfeeding is not promoted because no one gets rich off it. It’s free! Well, if that’s going to be our (sad) attitude about it, I think there could be a good market for this. Women can be paid to pump and produce milk, and it would actually have the positive effect of increasing availability of human milk for babies.

I know even after weaning I had milk for a year! If I’d been pumping and selling it, my supply wouldn’t have gone down (or at least not dwindled to nothing). Plus I’d have made a little extra money each month to help me stay home with my kiddos and had the knowledge I was helping someone else provide for their child.

I think it’s an awesome idea, as long as we don’t outsource to other countries to get cheap “labor” and take advantage of women in order to get this milk.

Honestly, this is sort of brilliant… Today there is so much pressure for women to breast feed that the toll it takes on women who cannot (physically can’t, or return to work and find themselves frustrated by pumping, refrigerating, and having that milk accidentally taken/left out/spoiled/etc…) is immense – I think its a great idea. That said, the story about the chef using his wife’s breast milk to make cheese seemed a little bit much – but I tend to be squeamish about all kinds of unpasteurized, exotic, foods…

Sarah, I’d definitely support your idea! 100% it’s a fabulous idea.

Shayna, agreed. I would have LOVED to have the option of buying this as opposed to being stuck feeding my son formula. Definitely.
